Vitra grundas år 1950 av Willi och Erika Fehlbaum i Schweiz. Paret driver till en början en verksamhet inom butiksinredning innan de bestämmer sig för att ta klivet ut på möbelmarknaden. Paret får tidigt tag på tillverkningslicensen för möbler ritade av den amerikanska formgivarduon Charles och Ray Eames och lyckas bli enda auktoriserade tillverkarna av Eames-möbler i Europa.

Detta kommer att bli avgörande för etableringen av Vitra, och med sin gränsöverskridande kreativitet sätter de grunden för den modernistiska lekfullhet som blir varumärkets signum.

Legendarisk design med fokus på hållbarhet

Samarbetet med Charles och Ray Eames resulterar bland annat i stolen Eames Lounge Chair från år 1957 – en fåtölj med mjukt rundade, fanerade träpartier och sits av läder. Eames Lounge Chair räknas idag till en av de mest klassiska sittmöblerna som skapats i modern tid. Hållbarhet är en röd tråd i Vitras arbete och stor vikt läggs på att använda högkvalitativa och hållbara material.

Under 1960-talets början sprider sig nyfikenheten för Vitra runt om i Europa. I raden av samarbeten hittas framstående formgivare som den amerikanske industridesignern George Nelson och danske Verner Panton som bland annat formger den legendariska Panton Chair år 1967. Stolen i högglansig plast blir en sensation och får motta flera utmärkelser. Ett av de tidigaste exemplaren hittar du idag på Museum of Modern Art i New York.

Förutom möbelproduktion är Vitra känt för sitt campus i Weil am Rhein. Ett unikt design- och arkitekturcentrum strax utanför Basel. Här finns en samling byggnader av välkända arkitekter som Nicholas Grimshaw, Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Álvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron och SANAA. På området hittar du även inredningsinspiration i världsklass på Vitra Design Museum, som anses vara ett av världens främsta designmuseum. Efter åttio år är Vitra fortfarande familjedrivet och man tror starkt på god design med hållbarhet som utgångspunkt.
